Top speed: 210km/h (130mp/h)
Weight: 2.075kg
Fuel tank (US gallons): 85 liters (22.45 US gallons)

Doing a fuel consumption test in a BMW X5 xDrive30d (MY 2012 / E70). Aim of this test is not to give an exact specification of the fuel consumption of this car, but to show an approximation of the fuel consumption under real life circumstances.

In the video I did a test of the consumption at different speeds. Aim of this test is not to give an exact specification of the fuel consumption of this car, but to show an approximation of the fuel consumption under real life circumstances. As the result also depends on tyres, size of the rims, road condition, weather and equipment that may alter the exact weight of the car, your personal experience may differ from mine.

Fuel consumption: BMW X5 xDrive40d (2015 / F15)

Model (Code / Model Year): BMW X5 xDrive40d (2015 / F15)

Engine: straight-six diesel engine (2993cm³) with variable geometry turbochargers  / engine code: N57D30
Transmission: 8-speed automatic transmission
Performance: 313hp (230kW) / 630nm

Top speed: 236km/h (148mp/h)
Weight: 2110 kg
Fuel tank (US gallons): 85 liter (22,5 US gallons)

The video below shows the approximate fuel consumption at different (constant) speeds. However, I drove this particular car for 4.500 kilometer on regular driving in different driving conditions. This resulted in a calculated fuel consumption during this trip averaged out at 9.48l / 100km.

In the video I did a test of the consumption at different speeds. Aim of this test is not to give an exact specification of the fuel consumption of this car, but to show an approximation of the fuel consumption under real life circumstances. Picture update: BMW X5 xDrive30d LCI (2012 / E70)

In 2006 BMW introduced its second generation X5 (in the US, in Europe in 2007), known by its BMW code "E70", and has been in production from 08/2006 till 08/2013. It was preceded by the E53 (1999 - 2006) and has succeeded by the new X5 F15 (since 2013). Production of the E70 took place in Spartanburg, United States, but kits have also been assembled in Toluca, Mexico and by Avtovor in Kaliningrad, Russia.

The BMW X5 E70 underwent a "Life Cycle Impulse" (LCI) update in 2010, which debuted at the New York Auto show in April 2010. Changes included revised styling, primarily of the front and rear bumpers, air intakes and headlights, but also included new exterior and interior colours and BMW's latest infotainment system. Apart from these changes a new range of engines was also introduced, while other engines received updates and the new 8-speed automatic gearbox was available for the X5.

In this post we take a closer look at a 2012 BMW X5 xDrive30d LCI and compare it to a pre-LCI BMW X5 3.0d, but equipped with the (optional) M-package.

On the left a pre-LCI X5 and on the right an X5 that already has the LCI specifications, which include revised spoilers and different angel eyes (instead of beige they are white).

Some pro's and con's on the BMW X5 xDrive30d LCI:

Pro:
  • Refined and powerful (diesel) with an acceptable fuel consumption
  • Smooth 8-speed gearbox
  • Park Distance Control combined with top view camera make parking a vehicle of this size easy
  • Up-to-date navigation and entertainment system
  • Three passengers have enough room in the back
  • Large booth
Con:
  • Previous generation interior layout
  • Previous generation HUD
  • Smaller navigation screen compared to current generation BMWs
  • Build quality is ok, but of a lesser standard then "German" BMWs
Despite its age and being of the previous generation BMWs, the X5 E70 in the later years still is a relatively modern vehicle. Continuous updates to the vehicle, for example the new soft- and hardware for the navigation system, the use of high quality backup and topview cameras and the introduction of BMW Online / Teleservices, have resulted in a product that still feels up-to-date.

However, when compared to the newer generation BMWs (7-series F01, 5-series F10) there is a notable difference, making the X5 E70 feeling somewhat outdated. The cockpit layout is still of the previous generation BMWs, the screen size is smaller then that of the current generation BMWs, the HUD only has two colors and has a lower resolution, and there is no digital speedometer. But overall the X5 E70 is still a very enjoyable car.

Video update: BMW X5 xDrive30d LCI (2012 / E70)

BMW introduced the secoond generation of the BMW X5 (E70) in August 2006, while sales started in November 2006 in the United States and in March 2007 in Europe. Just as its predecessor the E70 is produced exclusively in Greer, South Carolina (Spartanburg plant) in the United States. From June 2010 BMW offered a facelift version of the E70 - LCI (Life Cycle Improvement) until production ran out in August of 2013 in favor of the all new BMW X5 F15.

This specific car is a BMW X5 xDrive30d LCI with the (optional) M-sport package. The car itself is Alpine White and has tobacco nevada leather. More videos / pictures and information about the E70 generation BMW X5 can be found here: BMW X5 E70

Spotlight: BMW X5 3.0d (2009 / E70)

"Spotlight" is the section at Guitigefilmpjes aimed at making a short "pro-con" review combined with pictures and videos of cars that have been on the market for several years. Because the pictures and videos have been made several years ago, the quality may not be up to the modern standards. Still, Guitigefilmpjes would like to look back on these cars and share this with you.

In 2007, BMW introduced the E70 as the 2nd generation X5 and as the predecessor to the X5 E53 (1999 - 2007). It was presented for the first time in August 2006 and went on sale in November 2006 in the United States, while in Germany had to wait until March 2007.
Just as with the E53, the E70 is mainly produced at BMW's Greer, South Carolina plant in the USA, alongside the BMW X6. However, assembly also takes place at BMW facilities in Toluca, Mexico and Kalingrad, Russia.

BMW improved the E70 by implementing a facelift, that is internally called "LCI - Life Cycle Improvement". Apart from minor changes in the styling, the E70 also received a new infotainment system and improved engines.

Extra equipment:

M-sport package:
  • Interior trim brushed aluminium, Exterior aluminium, roof rails high-gloss Shadowline, 19-inch alloys styling 223M, sport seats with memory, anthracite headliner, M sport steering wheel, M sport bumpers, sport suspension) The exterior included bumpers that are painted in the car color instead of black plastic, this optical advantage was the main reason to order it.
  • Carbonblack metallic Included in the M-package, normally black and in the sun with a blue shade, lovely color.
  • Leather Nevada black Included in the M-package, as the car is regurlarly used for transporting loads, the black interior will not show wear and tear that easily.

  • Navigation Professional
  • Park Distance Control front and rear
  • Xenon headlights
  • HiFi system
  • USB-connection
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • Rear window sunblinds
  • Removal of the badging (3.0d & X5 badge)
  • Lumbar support

Some pro's and con's on this 2009 BMW X5 3.0d xDrive:

Pro:
  • Smooth diesel engine
  • The same can be said for the smooth shifting of the 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission
  • Sports suspension provides enough feedback from this otherwise heavy car
  • Comfortable sports seats
  • Because of its width and lack of transmission shaft, a 3rd person can sit comfortably in the middle seat of the back row
  • Large booth
  • The ample storage space in the center forward armrest
  • Feel of the M-sport steering wheel is excellent
Con:
  • Car did not have the Efficient Dynamics package, resulting in a high fuel consumption
  • No Bluetooth was ordered (although it was available), causing nuisance when calling
  • The then current DVD-based navigation system is slow for current standards
