Vlog: Cartalk BMW 320i E90 update

In this vlog an update on my BMW 320i (MY2007 / E90). It has been standing in the driveway for some time and starts to show some minor issues.

Car used: BMW 320i (E90 / MY2007)

Fuel consumption: BMW 320i (MY2007 / E90)

Model (Code / Model Year): BMW 320i Limousine (2007 / E90)

Engine: four-cylinder petrol engine (1995cm³)  / engine code: N46B20
Transmission: 6-speed manual transmission
Performance: 150hp (110kW) / 200nm
0 to 100km/h: 9,0 sec
Top speed: 220km/h (138mp/h)
Weight: 1.335 kg
Fuel tank (US gallons): 63 liter (16,6 US gallons)

If you follow this link to Spritmonitor, you are able to see the (calculated) consumption of my 320i during the past 7 years and approximately 122.000 kilometers. As you can see there, I averaged 7,29l / 100km during that time, with the lowest fuel consumption of 6,23l / 100km and the highest of 9,02l / 100km.

Current (calculated) consumption:  Spritmonitor.de

In the video I did a test of the consumption at different speeds. Aim of this test is not to give an exact specification of the fuel consumption of this car, but to show an approximation of the fuel consumption under real life circumstances. As the result also depends on tyres, size of the rims, road condition, weather and equipment that may alter the exact weight of the car, your personal experience may differ from mine.

My BMW 320i: Cartalk BMW 320i TUV

My BMW 320i (MY2007 / E90) has reached 231.000 kilometers, and after owning it for 4 years it was up for the two-yearly technical check (TUV). It succesfully passed the technical check, but let's see how it went in this vlog.

My BMW 320i: Cartalk on the BMW 320i E90

I have had my BMW 320i for 4 years now, and put 105.000 kilometers on it. Naturally I keep my 2007 BMW 320i in the best possible condition, servicing and repairing it when this is required, but I have hit a rough patch when it comes to repairs (valve seals, ABS sensors).

So let's talk about my options. Continue driving the 320i (driving 50.000 kilometers each year on it)? Buy a different used BMW 318d / 320d LCI (F30 / F31)? Or get a company car?

My BMW 320i: The big 200k!

In this video I had my BMW 320i for 3 years and three months, and put 76.520 kilometers on it (hit the big 200k now). Naturally I keep my 2007 BMW 320i in the best possible condition, servicing and repairing it when this is required.

So what do you think? Should I continue driving this car, or should I replace it? Will it last, or cause me a lot of trouble? After the ban on diesels, will old petrol cars be the next ones?

My BMW 320i: Issues

When I made this video I had my BMW 320i for 2 years, and put 50.000 kilometers on it (total of almost 173.000 at that time). Naturally this 2007 car has its issues that need attention, some technical, some cosmetical.

- The paintwork has stone chips and scratches - Small dents - Worn floor mats - Oil consumption - The clutch is worn - And some other things

My BMW 320i: Do It Yourself

With my two left hands I usually don't do that much of maintenance on my cars. However, I started to try doing some simple things and like to share them with you. Don't laugh, I replaced the windscreen whipers and filled up the washing fluid.

Spotlight: Alpina B3 Biturbo Touring (2009 / E91)

Today another "Spotlight" blog, in which Guitigefilmpjes looks back on cars that have been encountered a few years ago. Hence, the spotlight is put on a special BMW today, which is quite unique on the road. Note, in the car documents the manufacturer is not stated as BMW but as Alpina, which is a seperate brand. But apart from the same platform that Alpina and BMW share, the relationship also becomes clear as Alpina's are sold through designated BMW dealerships.

When Alpina introduced the B3 Biturbo on the E90 platform, it was the successor to the B3 2.7 that was available in the E30, E36 and E46 platform. The B3 Biturbo was produced from 2007 until 2012 and has been based on the BMW 335i. Alpina has rebuild the 3.0 liter engine to 360hp with 500nm of torque and a top speed of 285km/h (178mp/h).

Alpina offers the B3 Biturbo as a regular sedan, but also as an estate, convertible and coupe. All-wheel drive is also an optional feature, and since 2010 the B3S Biturbo which features 400hp and a top speed of 300km/h (188mp/h) is also available.

In 2008 BMW gave the 3-series, internally know as the E90 (sedan) and E91 (Touring), a facelift. LED-technology modernised the design, the front was slightly reworked, and the newest communication technology was incorporated (new SatNav Professional, BMW Assist / Online).

1. Exterior

For the car manufacturer, the facelift always poses a dilemma. On the one side, existing customers should not get the feeling to drive an outdated car, while the car needs to be updated with recent technology in order to compete with more modern cars.

When comparing the 3-series (2005) against its direct rivals, the Mercedes Benz C-class (2007) and Audi A4 (2008), it is obvious that the 3-series the oldest one is. In the then available model range (7-series E65 and 5-series E60, the previous models), the 3-series was designed in a more conservative way. However, when introducing the facelift (also known as the LCI - Life Cycle Improvement), BMW did not try to match the competition, but to surpass it.
The exterior design has lost its sharp edges as the curves have been redesigned more "smoother". Looking alongside the hood, several lines have been added to represent a more muscular design, the front spoiler also has been "smoothened" and has been integrated deeper into the design of the car. These smoother lines represent the departure of the steep curves that Chris Bangle used in the BMW-design. Unfortunately, due to EU-regulations, the sleek rear-view mirrors have been replaced with larger "elephant ears".

Apart from the aforementioned changes, LED-technology has been introduced into the front and rear indicators, the rear lights (with LEDs in the distinctive "L-shape"). In contrast to the competition that fixed LED-technology "onto" the car, BMW was able to make it an integral part of the design.

Instead of the standard rims, this BMW 318d Touring is equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels. Although the small size, the styling 283 rims still give a good impression and are able to fill out the room in the wheel arches very well.

Styling 283 16-inch alloy wheels
2. Handling & Engine

Handling of the BMW 3-series is good, the car gives the driver enough feedback to the driver in order to feel what is happening. Although the car handling is good, the ride never is too hard or uncomfortable. Therefore the BMW 3-series is an excellent car for driving long distances. When comparing the handling to the Audi A4, it is very comparable, the main advantage for the 3-series stems from the rear wheel drive.

Although the BMW 318d has 143hp, one should not expect the performance of a 6-cylinder engine. It provides adequate power for most situations, while only on the highway the performance could be better, as the diesel engine loses its momentum at higher revs.

One of the main strenghts is the fuel consumption, including fast driving segments (160km/h+) on the German Autobahn, an calculated average of 7,3l / 100km was the result. But when driving at routine speeds, the consumption may even fall below 6,0l / 100km/h without becoming an obstacle to the other traffic. Lastly it is not only the fuel consumption that matters, but also the range you have without needing to stop for refuelling. Driving for 1.000 kilometer without having to refuel should be possible, when driving on secondary roads and on the highway.

3. Interior, multimedia and communication

BMWs standard seats are a constant object of discussion. Especially taller people view them as uncomfortable, while the seats are perfectly ok for people with a regular height. The interior itself has quite a fair amount of plastic, however it does not feel cheap, compared to the plastic in different brands / lower classes (Asian cars, Opel / Peugeot etc.). In direct comparison the interior of the Audi A4 is feeling somewhat better, while the Mercedes Benz C-class has risen to the same level after introducing the facelift in 2011. But the interior clearly represents the previous generation of BMWs, that now has been replaced with a new interior design. On the high gloss black interior trim dust and scratches are easily seen, therefore the aluminium trim might be a better option when selecting a dark upholstery.

Another excellent feature is the panoramic sunroof, both closed and opened it is a great additional feature to the car. Because of its sheer size, the car interior receives a lot more daylight, giving the impression of a more "open" and "larger" interior. But when opened the roof is only useful on secondary roads and in the city, as on the highway too much wind noise develops.

Combined with the facelift, the BMW 3-series also received an updated navigation system professional with an internal hard disk. It is the same that has been introduced in the new BMW 7-series F01 / F02 (in late 2008), with not only an upgrade regarding the iDrive-controller but also the software and interface of the system itself.

One new feature it the possibility to show the map with a satellite view
Together with the new navigation system Professional, BMW also introduced "BMW Online" for the 3-series. This gives the driver access to a wealth of online information, ranging from the weather to the new. As can be seen in the video below, the new also can be red to the driver in order to keep the focus on the road.

One point of bother is the placement of the USB-connection inside the armrest. As can be seen on the picture below, it causes an USB-stick to be placed vertically, therefore it is unable to close the armrest. You either need to have an extra USB-cable in order to let the device rest horizontally, or keep the armrest open.

4. Final thougths

The 2010 BMW 318d Touring LCI is a very good car, there are no major points of bother. The facelifted design, the modern navigation system Professional that included BMW Online / Assist and connecting the car to a large amount of information, the economical engine, the BMW 318d is even after having been on the market for 7 years a remarkable good car. Only a few minor details tell its age, while it still is not less then the current competition (Audi A4, Mercedes Benz C-class).

Although it has a steep price of almost €50.000 new (including the options this car has), you still should be able to get good discounts on a new E91, as its successor is only a few months away from introduction. If receiving a good discount, the BMW 3-series E91 is still a very good car that gives excellent value for money.

Fuel consumption: BMW 318i

In this episode the fuel consumption will be treated, not the one that is stated by the manufacturers and is usually too low, but the fuel consumption during regular driving. Please do not derive any definitive statements from our test, the fuel consumption you might have will always co-depend on factors like road condition, tires, your personal driving style and local traffic and weather conditions.

First we start with a BMW 318i Facelift (E90 / MY2010). The car is fitted with a 6-speed manual transmissoion and a 4-cylinder, 1995 cm3 engine with 143hp and weighs 1335 kg. BMW has spend a considerable amount of effort to decrease the fuel consumption of their cars by introducing Efficient Dynamics in an increasing amount of models.

The Efficient Dynamics package includes:
- Auto start-stop function, that shuts down the engine while the car is in neutral
- Brake energy regeneration, that is collecting energy for your battery, reducing the strain on the engine
- Electric power steering, only activated when turning your steering wheel
- Optimum shift indicator, telling you when to shift up or down in order to maximize fuel efficieny
- Lightweight engineering, reducing the weight of the car
- Reduced rolling resistance tires
- Low-friction fluids
- Active aerodynamics, in order to optimize the aerodynamics of the car

For more information about how the technology works, please visit the BMW website.

But what does this mean for real-life fuel consumption? Lets take a look at the first segment of our trip included driving on several types of roads:

Quiet city traffic (@60km/h = : 10%
Secondary road (@ 90 - 100km/h / 55 - 62mp/h): 50%
Highway (@ 145km/h = 90mph): 50%

BMW states the fuel consumption to be, we found the following results under real-life circumstances, driving a test route of 81,5km (51 miles).

- City traffic (5%): 8,1l / 100km or 29,04 mpg (US) vs. 4,0l / 100km or 58,8 mpg (US)*
- Highway (55%): 5,3l / 100km or 44,38 mpg (US)    vs. 7,0l / 100km or 33,6 mpg (US)
- Combined (40%): 6,3l / 100km 0r 37,34 mpg (US)  vs. 6,3 / 100km or 37,34 mpg (US)**

* during the time of your test drive, little traffic was encountered. Therefore, the results have been substantial lower compared to BMW's result that includes repeated stopping and accelerating, increasing the fuel consumption substantially.
** That our fuel consumption matches BMW's combined figure is based in the fact that our city traffic figure is much lower, during rush hour it would result in a substantial risen combined fuel comsumption.
Please take a moment to see the road and traffic conditions during our test in the video below.

Our second result is derived from a couple of days driving in which a distance of 1300km (813) miles has been covered, most of which on the highway. This time we did not try to drive as economically as possible, but had a regular driving style with fast drives on the highway.

Our final combined fuel consumption was 8,0l / 100km or 29,4 mpg (US). Taking these results into account, the most likely consumption for average drivers in the BMW 318i will be between 7,0 to 8,0l or 33,6 to 29,4 mpg (US).
