Vlog: Cartalk BMW 116d Goodbye

My BMW 116d was due to return to the leasing company in June 2022, being 5 years old. I kept the car a little bit longer, but had to turn it in at last.

So my thoughts on 3 years and over 100.000 kilometers with this BMW 116d LCI Efficient Dynamics Edition, and what will be next?

Vlog: Cartalk BMW 116d replacement, BMW 320e?

My BMW 116d was due to return to the leasing company in January 2021, being 3.5 years old. However, they asked me if I wanted to extend the lease for 1 year. As I did not fancy a different car and was happy with this one, I agreed to extend the lease to January 2022 or 209.000 kilometers.

But that posed a different question, what kind of car will be the successor to the BMW 116d? These are my options: 1: revert to a mobility budget and buy myself a car 2: get a new leasing car As I am a BMW fan I was thinking that option 1 was the cheapest way to get myself a BMW, as I was looking for a second hand BMW 320d Touring that is about 4 years old. But then I was looking through the leasing configurator, and found the well-priced BMW 320e.

Vlog: Cartalk BMW 116d LCI pressure sensor

In this video I was driving my BMW 116d LCI (MY2017 / F20) on the motorway, and suddenly I experienced a drop in power combined with hickups every few minutes. What was going on, and would I make it home?

My BMW 116d LCI: losing engine power & BMW 116i G40 review

In this video I found out that my 116d LCI lost its turbo - or at least lost power at higher revs. In this video I went to the BMW dealership to get things fixed, and also talk a bit about the 116i G40 loaner I got.

My BMW 116d is due to return to the leasing company in June 2021, being 5 years old. I agreed to extend the lease and still have no clue what car I should get next.

My BMW 116d LCI: damage repairs

In this video I took my BMW 116d to a car service center to get a few things fixed. As you can see some part fell of a truck an hit my bumper, which caused the fog lights to fall out. In the same week some construction workers hit my left passenger door, causing further damage. And to make it complete, the 116d was also due for an MOT (APK).

My BMW 116d LCI: service & hitting things

In this video I was taking my BMW 116d LCI to the dealership for a regular service, and got a nice new loaner car. When receiving the car back, I was happily driving it for a few days and then I was forced to go back again because I was hitting things....

After my BMW 116d LCI Efficient Dynamics Edition (MY2017 / F20) has been standing for 34 days in the driveway due to the corona crisis, it was all dusty and covered in sand. My BMW 116d LCI: First Impressions

My BMW 116d LCI: Introduction

You won't be taken completely by surprise, I posted a blog with the walkaround videos of this car some weeks ago, but as a company car I got this BMW 116d from a colleague. As it has been with me for quite some time, I also made a video series on this car (as with my BMW 320i E90). Thus you will be seeing a video series here on the 116d.

This vlog was shot when I picked up my BMW 116d LCI Efficient Dynamics Edition (MY2017 / F20). Making the car my own, I adjusted all the settings to my own preferences, and then I transferred several items from the BMW 320i to the 116d.

In the following blog I will post about my first impression about the 116d LCI Efficient Dynamics Edition.

Fuel consumption: BMW 116d LCI EfficientDynamics Edition

Model designation: BMW 116d LCI Efficient Dynamics Edition

Engine: B37D15A 3-cylinder TwinPower-Turbo diesel engine (1496 cm³
Transmission: 6-speed manual transmission
Performance: 116hp (85kW) / 270nm
0 to 100km/h: 10.4 sec
Top speed: 195 km/h (122mp/h)
Fuel tank (US gallons): 52 liters (13.74 US gallons)

In March of 2012 BMW introduced the "116d Efficient Dynamics Edition" in the BMW 1-series range. Several adjustments to the regular 116d enables the car to be the first BMW to undercut the CO2-emission of 100 g/km thus making it an attractive alternative for customers faced with all kind of fleet and tax limits that are based on the environmental impact of the car. Moreover, it reduced the consumption by 0.3l / 100km compared to the regular 116d, but also came with a reduced top speed (by 5km/h).

An important thing to note is that "Efficient Dynamics" is a program of alterations that are implemented at all BMWs, while this "Efficient Dynamics Edition" brings broader changes to the (technical) configuration of the car. This results in slightly reduced performance, in order to reduce the revs slightly in order for the turbo to run more efficiently - in addition to a lowered suspension. Compared to the regular BMW, which always starts in the "Comfort" driving mode, the Efficient Dynamics Edition always uses the "Eco Pro" driving mode.

The 116d Efficient Dynamics Edition has been cancelled due to lack of demand (in Germany only 3% of total 1-series sales) when the second facelift was introduced for the F20-generation in July of 2017. So my 116d Efficieny Dynamics Edition was also one of the last to be produced when it came of the line in June of 2017.

However, if you follow this link to Spritmonitor, you are able to see the (calculated) consumption of my 116d during the past 3 years and approximately 95.000 kilometers. As you can see there, I averaged 4,65l / 100km during that time, with the lowest fuel consumption of 3,76l / 100km and the highest of 6,24l / 100km. So I wasn't able to come anywhere near the 3,4l / 100km it says in the brochure, though it is nonetheless a very good result.

Btw, I was able to hit 1.200km on one tank on several occasions!

Current (calculated) consumption: Spritmonitor.de

In the video I did a test of the consumption at different speeds. Aim of this test is not to give an exact specification of the fuel consumption of this car, but to show an approximation of the fuel consumption under real life circumstances. As the result also depends on tyres, size of the rims, road condition, weather and equipment that may alter the exact weight of the car, your personal experience may differ from mine.
